It’s your classroom and you’re in total control! You can teach what makes you happy. If for some reason things aren’t going the way you planned or the way you like, all you have to do is make a change. It’s that simple! Nothing can stop you from having the classroom of your dreams. In the very first episode of the Punk Rock Preschool podcast, find out how to bring your passions, excitement, and enthusiasm to school every day and teach what you love!
What makes you tick? What are your favorite interests that energize and excite you? What topics get you animated and loud? Find the subjects that fit your personality and your classroom and teach them! The only way students will be engaged is if teachers are engaged!
I know what it feels like to go through the motions, to feel trapped within your curriculum — teaching the same thing everyday; feeling like your school routine is become more of a trance than a schedule. But you can snap out of that trance! You can teach anything you want and that means teaching what you love. When you teach your passions and bring your natural energy and enthusiasm to class, your students will match that same energy and enthusiasm! Even more, they will begin to find their passions and develop their own interests! As you expose them to the fascinating things in your life and in the world, they will make the association that learning must always be this exciting!
I was ready to pull my hair out sticking to the curriculum I was given! I did not love teaching about cars and planes or animal noises or spending all morning going over the weather and calendar. I felt like the curriculum from my school was holding me back. Then I realized that my responsibility wasn’t to following this curriculum; it was to my students and my parents! So, I did what any first-year teacher with no experience in the classroom would do — I made my own curriculum and never looked back.
In this episode, we discuss building the mindset to throw caution to thew wind, take control of your classroom, and teach the things that make you happy. Get ready to see amazing results. When you teach the things you love, you make school a fun and cool and exciting place for kids! And when you give kids a great first impression of school and learning – when you set them up with passions, interests, and a desire to keep learning – then you’ve changed a life.
